On June 1, 2024,The American National Standard For Safety Of Corded Window Covering Products went into effect. This guideline requires the majority window coverings sold in the US to be cordless or have cords intentionally constructed with safety devices. It serves as a significant step toward phasing out the use of cords that are a strangulation risk to young children.
A New Window Cover Safety Standard
The Window Covering Manufacturers Association and American National Standards Institute is enforcing an updated safety measure for window covering products. ANSI/WCMA A100.1-2022 is a standard that spells out new guidelines for window treatments that “reduce the possibility of injury, including strangulation, to young children from the bead chain, cord, or any type of flexible loop.”
Beginning June 1, 2024, window treatments sold in the US must satisfy the new safety standard. Most products will come in cordless styles. Treatments that have a continuous loop operating system must include a compliant tension device to keep the loop from becoming a strangulation risk. These rules will notably lessen the possibility of window treatment cord injuries and deaths among small children.
